1996 | 274 Pages | ISBN: 0195637321 | PDF | 51 MB
For ornithologists, natural history enthusiasts, environmentalists, and amateur birdwatchers, this revised edition of a 1983 book is essential as the only single-volume guide available of birds in India. Unlike similar books, which only cover one region and even then only a small portion of species in their area, this volume includes all the bird species found in the Indian subcontinent, shown in over 100 color plates from noted American bird painter John Henry Dick. The plates have been arranged by family in systematic order, and the author provides concise information concerning status, size, habitat, and distribution.

Nick Jans, "A Place Beyond: Finding Home in Arctic Alaska"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 0882408070 | EPUB | pages: 192 | 2.8 mb
Nick Jans leads us into his "found" home―the Eskimo village of Ambler, Alaska, and the vast wilderness around it. In his powerful essays, the rhythms of daily arctic life blend with high adventure―camping among the wolves, traveling with Inupiat hunters, witnessing the Kobuk River at spring breakup.

The poignancy of a village funeral comes to life, hordes of mosquitoes whine against a tent, a grizzly stands etched against the snow―just a sampling of the images and events rendered in Jans' transparent, visual prose. Moments of humor are offset by haunting insights, and by thoughtful reflections on contemporary Inupiaq culture, making A Place Beyond a book to read and enjoy.

Miguel Abensour, "A Politics of Emancipation: The Miguel Abensour Reader "
English | ISBN: 143849825X | 2024 | 339 pages | EPUB, PDF | 701 KB + 2 MB
Despite his influence in utopian studies and democratic theory, French philosopher Miguel Abensour (1939-2017) has yet to be fully discovered in the English-speaking world as only a fraction of his work has been translated. A Politics of Emancipation fills this void by translating a selection of his seminal essays into English for the first time. The Reader provides a systematic overview of Abensour's work and the two inseparable projects that govern his approach to political theory: on the one hand, a radical critique of all forms of domination and, on the other, a desire to conceptualize the political as the realm of freedom and emancipation. For Abensour, both projects are to be undertaken together in order to avoid the double trap of an evacuation of conflict from politics and the reduction of politics to a form of domination. In other words, a politics of emancipation requires a "ruthless" critique of domination coupled with an analysis of politics as the domain within which human beings experience freedom and equality.

A Politics of Inevitability: The Privatisation of the Berlin Water Company, the Global City Discourse, and Governance in 1990s Berlin By Ross Beveridge (auth.)
2012 | 234 Pages | ISBN: 3531182196 | PDF | 2 MB
This book provides a detailed analysis of the controversial privatisation of the Berlin Water Company (BWB) in 1999. As with other cases of privatisation around the world, the city's government argued there was no alternative in a context of public debts and economic restructuring. Drawing on post-structuralist theory, the analysis presented here steps outside the parameters of this neat, straightforward explanation. It problematises the 'hard facts' upon which the decision was apparently made, presenting instead an account in which facts can be political constructions shaped by normative assumptions and political strategies. A politics of inevitability in 1990s Berlin is revealed; one characterised by depoliticisation, expert-dominated policy processes and centred upon the perceived necessities of urban governance in the global economy. It is an account in which global and local dynamics mix: where the interplay between the general and the specific, between neoliberalism and politicking, and between globalisation and local actors characterise the discussion.

A Question of Standing: The History of the CIA by Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones
English | August 25th, 2022 | ISBN: 0192847961 | 320 pages | True EPUB | 0.58 MB
A Question of Standing deals with recognizable events that have shaped the history of the first 75 years of the CIA. Unsparing in its accounts of dirty tricks and their consequences, it values the agency's intelligence and analysis work to offer balanced judgements that avoid both celebration and condemnation of the CIA.

The mission of the CIA, derived from U-1 in World War I more than from World War II's OSS, has always been intelligence. Seventy-five years ago, in the year of its creation, the National Security Act gave the agency, uniquely in world history up to that point, a democratic mandate to pursue that mission of intelligence. It gave the CIA a special standing in the conduct of US foreign relations. That standing diminished when successive American presidents ordered the CIA to exceed its original mission. When they tasked the agency secretly to overthrow democratic governments, the United States lost its international standing, and its command of a majority in the United Nations General Assembly. Such dubious operations, even the government's embrace of assassination and torture, did not diminish the standing of the CIA in US public opinion. However, domestic interventions did. CIA spying on domestic protesters led to tighter congressional oversight from the 1970s on.
The chapters in A Question of Standing offer a balanced narrative and perspective on recognizable episodes in the CIA's history. They include the Bay of Pigs invasion, the War on Terror, 9/11, the weapons of mass destruction deception, the Iran estimate of 2007, the assassination of Osama bin Laden, and Fake News. The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 diminished the CIA and is construed as having been the right solution undertaken for the wrong reasons, reasons that grew out of political opportunism. The book also defends the CIA's exposure of foreign meddling in US elections.

A Quiet Company of Dangerous Men: The Forgotten British Special Operations Soldiers of World War II by Shannon Monaghan
English | September 10th, 2024 | ISBN: 059349122X | 400 pages | True EPUB | 22.82 MB
The untold story of four special operations officers who fought together behind enemy lines across multiple theaters of World War II, and then continued to serve, officially and unofficially, for decades after in the hottest parts of the Cold War

There have always been special warriors; Achilles and his Myrmidons are the obvious classical examples. What we now think of as "special operations," however, were born in World War II, and one of the earliest and most exciting units formed was Britain's SOE.In the early years of the war, when Britain stood alone against the Nazis, Winston Churchill put them on a mission to "set Europe ablaze": to foment local revolt, to gather intelligence, to blow up bridges, and to do anything that could help to disrupt the Axis cause. A Quiet Company of Dangerous Men follows four SOE officers who distinguished themselves in this fight: the Spanish Civil War veteran Peter Kemp, the demolitions expert David Smiley, the born guerrilla leader Billy McLean, and the political natural Julian Amery.
With new and extensive research, including unprecedented access to private family papers that reveal the men's unbreakable bonds and vibrant personalities, Shannon Monaghan has uncovered a story of war in the twentieth century that, due to the secretive nature of the SOE's work, has remained largely unknown. A Quiet Company of Dangerous Men is a thrilling and inspiring story of four remarkable men who, through sheer determination and daring, as well as unwavering friendship and loyalty, fought for a better world.

Graeme Smith, "A Short History of Secularism (I.B.Tauris Short Histories)"
English | 2007 | pages: 233 | ISBN: 1845115775, 1845115767 | PDF | 2,2 mb
What does it mean to call Western society 'secular'? What is secularism? And how should we understand the the concept of 'secularism' in international relations, particularly the clash between radical Islam and the West? The word 'secular' has come to mean that which belongs to this life, to the here and now, in this world. It is widely used as a shorthand for the ideology which shapes contemporary society without reference to the divine. However, according to Graeme Smith, 'secularism' represents a great deal more. He offers a radical reappraisal of the notion of secularism and its history, beginning with the Greeks and proceeding to modernity and the contemporary period. The assumption that the West is becoming increasingly secular is often unquestioned. By contrast, Dr Smith discerns a different kind of society: one informed by a historical legacy which makes sense only when it is appreciated that it is religious. Secularism was born of Christianity. Daringly - and very originally - Smith argues that it is impossible to understand the idea of the secular without appreciating that, at root, it is Christian. A Short History of Secularism will fundamentally reshape discussions of western culture, religion and politics, and will have strong appeal to students of religion, political philosophy and the history of ideas.

Diego Enrique Londoño-Paredes, "A Social Ontology of Psychosis: Genea-logical Treatise on Lacan's Conception of Psychosis "
English | ISBN: 1032663537 | 2024 | 162 pages | PDF | 3 MB
In A Social Ontology of Psychosis, Diego Enrique Londoño-Paredes explores how to interpret and apply the concept of the signifier of the Name-of-the-Father in Lacanian theory, particularly in the context of working with psychosis.

Londoño proposes a logical framework drawing on the work of Badiou, then traces the historical development of this concept and its implications as a structural necessity for anyone who speaks and engages in discourse. The book opens by exploring set theory, transitioning from nought to one, from the Thing to the object, essential for any presentation. Subsequently, it follows a historical path, examining the evolution of the figure and the signifier of the Father, journeying from ancient Mesopotamian roots through Modernity, touching upon Claudel's theater and the films of the Coen brothers. Finally, it aligns Searle's social ontology with Lacan's discourses, highlighting psychosis as an illustration of being outside discourse, particularly when the Name-of-the-Father is foreclosed. Case material illustrates various ways psychosis manifests without distinct clinical evidence.
