Optimal Control By Frank L. Lewis, Vassilis L. Syrmos
1995 | 552 Pages | ISBN: 0471033782 | PDF | 14 MB
This new, updated edition of Optimal Control reflects major changes that have occurred in the field in recent years and presents, in a clear and direct way, the fundamentals of optimal control theory. It covers the major topics involving measurement, principles of optimality, dynamic programming, variational methods, Kalman filtering, and other solution techniques. To give the reader a sense of the problems that can arise in a hands-on project, the authors have included new material on optimal output feedback control, a technique used in the aerospace industry. Also included are two new chapters on robust control to provide background in this rapidly growing area of interest. Relations to classical control theory are emphasized throughout the text, and a root-locus approach to steady-state controller design is included. A chapter on optimal control of polynomial systems is designed to give the reader sufficient background for further study in the field of adaptive control. The authors demonstrate through numerous examples that computer simulations of optimal controllers are easy to implement and help give the reader an intuitive feel for the equations. To help build the reader's confidence in understanding the theory and its practical applications, the authors have provided many opportunities throughout the book for writing simple programs.Optimal Control will also serve as an invaluable reference for control engineers in the industry. It offers numerous tables that make it easy to find the equations needed to implement optimal controllers for practical applications. All simulations have been performed using MATLAB and relevant Toolboxes.Optimal Control assumes a background in the state-variable representation of systems; because matrix manipulations are the basic mathematical vehicle of the book, a short review is included in the appendix.A lucid introductory text and an invaluable reference, Optimal Control will serve as a complete tool for the professional engineer and advanced student alike. As a superb introductory text and an indispensable reference, this new edition of Optimal Control will serve the needs of both the professional engineer and the advanced student in mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering. Its coverage encompasses all the fundamental topics as well as the major changes of recent years, including output-feedback design and robust design. An abundance of computer simulations using MATLAB and relevant Toolboxes is included to give the reader the actual experience of applying the theory to real-world situations. Major topics covered include:* Static Optimization* Optimal Control of Discrete-Time Systems* Optimal Control of Continuous-Time Systems* The Tracking Problem and Other LQR Extensions* Final-Time-Free and Constrained Input Control* Dynamic Programming* Optimal Control for Polynomial Systems* Output Feedback and Structured Control* Robustness and Multivariable Frequency-Domain Techniques

Aelius Aristides, "Orations, Volume I "
English | ISBN: 0674996461 | 2017 | 720 pages | PDF | 10 MB
Meticulous eloquence.

Publius Aelius Aristides Theodorus was among the most celebrated, versatile, and influential authors of the Second Sophistic era and an important figure in the transmission of Hellenism. Born to wealthy landowners in Mysia in AD 117, he studied in Athens and Pergamum and had begun a promising oratorical career when in the early 140s he fell chronically ill and retreated to the healing shrine of Asclepius in Pergamum. There he began to follow a lifelong series of dream revelations and instructions from the god that inspired the six autobiographical books of Sacred Tales, an invaluable record of both temple therapy and personal religious experience published in the 170s. By 147 Aristides was able to resume his public activities as a member of the landed and gubernatorial elite and to pursue a successful oratorical career. Based at his family estate in Smyrna, he traveled between bouts of illness and produced speeches and lectures for both public and private occasions, declamations on historical themes, polemical works, prose hymns, and essays on a wide variety of subjects, all of it displaying deep and creative familiarity with the classical literary heritage. He died between 180 and 185.
This edition of Aristides' complete works offers fresh translations and texts based on the critical editions of Lenz-Behr (

Organizing in the Digital Age
by Edited by Michael Barrett, Emmanuelle Vaast, Ann Langley, and Haridimos Tsoukas

English | 2024 | ISBN: 0198899459 | 257 pages | True PDF | 7.48 MB

Organizing in the Digital Age draws on a process-oriented perspective to understand the pervasiveness of digitalization in organizations, and contemporary society. Ongoing and multiple crises, whether it be the pandemic, the economy, or climate change, have magnified the importance of digital technologies in processes of organizing and accelerated the role of digital transformation in work-life. The central themes underpinning the chapters in this book concern the becoming of digital work, the conceptualization of agency in digital work, and the role of temporality in contemporary organizing. The increasing entanglement of digital technologies and work (accelerated through the Covid-19 pandemic) have fuelled interest in the need for understanding digital work happening at scale, while also examining and exposing inequalities. The concern with the role of agency in digital work reaches new heights when we consider the rapid and pervasive development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and algorithmic control, and raises concerns about the ethical and moral dimension of agency. Methodologically, the book explores the use of digital trace data as a resource in the study of organizing processes. While digital traces offer unprecedented access to temporally evolving activity, they are nevertheless limited in their ability to represent phenomena. In essence, 'processual shadows' visible from digital data traces may be difficult to interpret without in-person observational data such as ethnography. Theoretical approaches around performativity are discussed in terms of the impact (or not) of innovative digital technologies, such as blockchain in organizations, while routine dynamics and pragmatism are drawn on in providing a processual understanding of the why and how of IT computer workarounds within organizational work practices.

John D. Leshy, "Our Common Ground: A History of America's Public Lands"
English | ISBN: 030023578X | 2022 | 736 pages | PDF | 16 MB
The little-known story of how the U.S. government came to hold nearly one-third of the nation's land and manage it primarily for recreation, education, and conservation

"A much-needed chronicle of how the American people decided-wisely and democratically-that nearly a third of the nation's land surface should remain in our collective ownership and be managed for our common good."-Dayton Duncan, author of The National Parks: America's Best Idea
America's public lands include more than 600 million acres of forests, plains, mountains, wetlands, deserts, and shorelines. In this book, John Leshy, a leading expert in public lands policy, discusses the key political decisions that led to this, beginning at the very founding of the nation. He traces the emergence of a bipartisan political consensus in favor of the national government holding these vast land areas primarily for recreation, education, and conservation of biodiversity and cultural resources.
That consensus remains strong and continues to shape American identity. Such a success story is a bright spot in an era of cynicism about government. This book is essential reading for anyone who cares about public lands, and it is particularly timely as the world grapples with the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.

English | February 20, 2024 | ISBN: 1469679183 | 216 pages | PDF | 2.81 Mb
This is an unmistakable time of crisis and confusion about the purpose, value, and sustainability of higher education in the United States. Data continues to show substantial benefits for students who complete a four-year degree, yet Americans from all backgrounds are losing confidence in the nation's institutions of higher learning, and political and economic challenges for colleges and universities seem greater than ever. How can faculty, administrators, governing boards, and other stakeholders address these challenges effectively? Holden Thorp and Buck Goldstein draw on interviews with higher education thought leaders and their own experience inside and outside the academy to address these problems head on.

Now in paperback with a new preface by the authors, Our Higher Calling presents a forceful case for the enduring value of higher education along with pragmatic recommendations for how campus leaders can engage in constructive dialogue about necessary change.
