Die Geschichte verläuft parallel zu "Assassin's Creed 3", jedoch ist der Hauptcharakter erstmals kein Assassine - zumindest nicht mehr: Shay Cormac ist nämlich zu den Templern gewechselt. Der Plot eignet sich also ideal, die Geschichte der Vorgänger weiterzuspinnen. Schauplätze in "Rogue" sind New York, die ländliche Region des River Valley und ein Inselgeflecht im Nordatlantik. Im Nordatlantik kommt es zu Schiffsschlachten, die Ubisoft nach "Assassin's Creed - Black Flag" noch mal ausbaut. In New York - Schauplatz von "Assassin's Creed 3" - winken die serientypischen Schleich- und Klettereinlagen.
