▸ The vessel passed the analysis. The categorisation was wrong.
Division 2 buys thickness back by demanding proof. The design margin is lower, the shell is thinner, the steel bill is smaller - and in exchange the code requires an analysis, a specification and a design report that somebody has to be competent enough to produce and somebody else has to be competent enough to certify.
That trade goes wrong in predictable ways. A stress classification line drawn through a nozzle junction where linearisation was never valid. A discontinuity stress called primary because the software reported a high membrane value, and a wall that ends up thicker than Division 1 would have required. Or the reverse, and more dangerous - a genuine primary bending stress categorised as secondary, checked against the wrong limit, and passed.
The commercial consequences are just as real. A User's Design Specification that never states the cyclic duty, so the fatigue screening is done late and fails. A vendor who quoted a Division 2 vessel without pricing the full volumetric examination and the higher test pressure. A project that chose Division 2 for a vessel where the thickness saving never justified the analysis cost.
This course teaches Division 2 as a working engineer meets it: what the code is structured to do, how the Part 4 rules differ from Division 1 and why the answers diverge, and then Part 5 in full - the three assessment routes, categorisation and linearisation done properly, and the protections against local failure, buckling, fatigue and ratcheting.
▸ The analysis is the easy part. The judgement is not.
Any competent analyst can mesh a nozzle and read a stress plot. The difficulty in Division 2 is everything around the model - deciding which route to run, where to place the classification lines, what a membrane stress means at a gross structural discontinuity, and whether the number in front of you should be compared against the general primary membrane limit or the primary plus secondary range.
So the elastic route is taught alongside its known weaknesses rather than as a recipe, and the limit load and elastic-plastic routes are taught as the honest answer when categorisation stops being defensible. The load factors, the collapse criterion and the convergence behaviour are explained in terms of what they represent physically, not as inputs to a solver.
The decision to use Division 2 at all is treated commercially, because it is a commercial decision. The course sets out where the thickness saving pays for the analysis, documentation, tolerance and examination burden, and where the honest answer is that Division 1 was the right code.
