This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
▸ A code tells you how to build it. Almost nothing tells you what to do once it is damaged and still running.
Design codes assume new equipment. In-service codes assess fitness. Between them sits the question that actually lands on your desk: this line is leaking, this vessel has wall loss, the unit is running, and a decision is needed today. Run it, repair it, replace it, or rerate it - and if you repair it, by which method, under what controls, and how do you demonstrate afterwards that it was done properly?
ASME PCC-2 is the post-construction standard written for exactly this, and it is one of the least-taught documents in the industry. Most engineers meet it for the first time in the middle of an emergency.
▸ A repair decision framework, not a welding course
This course treats repair as a decision with engineering, risk and regulatory consequences rather than as a shop-floor technique. Each method is covered for what it can and cannot do, what it costs in downtime and access, what qualification it requires, and - critically - what makes it the wrong choice.
The interfaces are covered explicitly, because in practice PCC-2 never operates alone. Where the damage assessment comes from API 510, 570 or 653. Where fitness-for-service under API 579 decides whether a repair is even the right answer. Where ISO 24817 governs a composite repair and API 2201 governs a hot tap.

Repair engineering is learned almost entirely by exposure - from a contractor, a welding engineer, or the aftermath of a repair that failed. There is no course in it at most companies, and the standard itself is written as a reference document rather than as an explanation. The result is a discipline where practice varies enormously and where the same avoidable mistakes appear on plant after plant.
The most expensive of those mistakes is not a bad weld. It is a temporary repair that nobody removed.
