Wiener Oktett - The Decca Recordings [27CD Box Set] (2023) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 3,5 Gb

Decca signed an exclusive contract with the Wiener Oktett (Vienna Octet) in the summer of 1948 as a commercially motivated move: a sweetener to the deal that also poached the Philharmonic Orchestra from EMI. The ensemble had been formed only a year or so previously around the Boskovsky brothers, violinist Willi and clarinetist Alfred. Soon enough, audiences at home as well as in concert were enjoying the sound of a quintessentially Viennese ensemble, it's members drawn from the ranks of the Philharmonic, in Classical-era music that could have been written for them, starting with the Septet by Beethoven and the Octet by Schubert. The sweet, silvery tone of the Octet and the easy give-and-go of it's phrasing established the Octet as the latest in a line of distinguished Viennese chamber ensembles, from the Rosé Quartet of Mahler's era to the Barylli Quartet documented by the Westminster label. The Vienna Octet enjoyed the advantage of Decca's top-of-the-range engineering, and they continued to set down classic interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert through the course of the 1950s, for the new LP format and then for stereo. In 1956 their Decca albums began to reflect the diversity of their concert programs, with the Octet written for them by the Belgian composer Marcel Poot. While they continued to enjoy free-spirited partnerships on record with the likes of Clifford Curzon and the Viennese pianist Walter Panhofer in Schubert's 'Trout' Quintet, they also recorded lesser-known Romantics such as Spohr, Kreutzer and Berwald, and modern repertoire by Britten, Hindemith and Egon Wellesz. By the time of the Vienna Octet's final recording in November 1972, only two members of it's original lineup were left, including clarinetist Alfred Boskovsky, but critics and record buyers had continued to recognize that, especially in the central repertoire, an unselfconscious authenticity set the ensemble apart from it's rivals.

Deutsche Harmonia Mundi - 50 Jahre / 50th Anniversary Edition [50CD Box Set] (2008) MP3

2008 | Classical
MP3 320 Kbps | 7.04 Gb

A beautifully-packaged 50-disc box set, released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, one of the most important and adventurous early music labels

The set contains 50 classic recordings of baroque and ancient music, chosen to represent the breadth of this huge and varied catalogue and each disc is slip-cased with artwork replicating the original CD or LP artwork.

Included is a booklet with a detailed history of the label and its artists. It is half a century since Rudolf Ruby founded the label deutsche harmonia mundi in Freiburg. DHM, as it is known, enjoys a reputation primarily as an early music label, but if the label’s entire catalogue as preserved in DHM’s archives is examined, its sheer variety is amazing, for here we find very different aspects of deutsche harmonia mundi: in addition to the vast array of early music, there are also many contemporary works: music by Berg, Webern, Boulez, Hindemith, Messiaen and Rihm, to name but a few.

The company made its first recordings with artists of the stature of Jörg Demus, Elly Ameling, Paul Badura-Skoda, the Deller Consort and Gustav Leonhardt, all of whom increasingly left their mark on the label’s public profile. Among the early music specialists who continued to join the ranks of deutsche harmonia mundi are Andreas Staier, Les Adieux, Konrad Junghänel and his Cantus Cölln, Musica Fiata, Camerata Köln and La Stagione.

The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra under Thomas Hengelbrock joined the label’s roster of artists as representatives of the very youngest generation of performers. New faces from the early music scene were soon in evidence: Al Ayre Español under Eduardo López Banzo produced an impressive series of releases of Spanish Baroque music, Andrew Lawrence King and his Harp Consort continued to explore an equally unknown but valuable repertory.

Thomas Hengelbrock then founded his Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble, with which he undertook a number of extremely interesting and musically ravishing projects. And it is surely significant that Nikolaus Harnoncourt is once again playing an important role with deutsche harmonia mundi, a conductor who is one of the great names on the early music scene and who likewise undertook important pioneering work in this field during the early days of the Freiburg-based label.

Itzhak Perlman - The Complete Warner Recordings: [77CDs Box Set] (2015) MP3

2015 | Classical
MP3 320 Kbps | 8.87 Gb

It is quite impossible to imagine today's violin heritage without the absolute musical genius of Perlman. Daniel Barenboim

Itzhak Perlman, born in 1945, is the supreme violinist of his time. Warner Classics salutes him in his 70th birthday year with Itzhak Perlman: The Complete Warner Recordings, 59 albums on 77 CDs. Presenting his art in all its warmth, generosity and brilliance, this comprehensive edition unites the recordings Perlman made for both EMI and Teldec over a total period of more than 30 years.

Available as a magnificent deluxe box set, or as 59 separate releases, Itzhak Perlman: The Complete Warner Recordings embraces every aspect of Perlman s art. It contains concertos (the essential concertos, of course, but also more rarely-heard works, including Perlman s own commissions from living composers); other pieces for violin and orchestra; chamber music; recital and crossover repertoire (including jazz, ragtime and klezmer), and even a disc that focuses on Perlman as narrator and (briefly) opera singer. The recordings document his collaborations with the world s greatest orchestras and an array of superlative fellow-soloists and conductors, including Martha Argerich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, Plácido Domingo, Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Lynn Harrell, Yo Yo Ma, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, André Previn and Pinchas Zukerman.

Itzhak Perlman: The Complete Warner Recordings has been assembled with the greatest care. The recordings from the analogue era have been carefully remastered in 24-bit/96kHz sound at Abbey Road Studios. The format and presentation of each album is true to the original LP release: the couplings of musical works have been retained and the design reflects the original jacket. New notes on the music and the performances have been written by an internationally respected expert on violinists and violin-playing, Jean-Michel Molkhou.

The box set also contains a beautifully produced hardback book, featuring a wealth of photographs, many of them from private collections and never before published. Running to more than 100 pages, it contains a new interview with Itzhak Perlman (written by Jean-Michel Molkhou), an essay on his life and career and personal tributes from distinguished and varied fellow musicians, including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, Renaud Capuçon, Ivry Gitlis, Gidon Kremer, Yo Yo Ma, Vadim Repin and Maxim Vengerov.

Complementing Itzhak Perlman: The Complete Warner Recordings is a 3-CD box called The Perlman Sound, released in September 2015. This features a selection of the most popular works and recordings from the complete edition and eloquently summarizes just why Itzhak Perlman is regarded as the supreme violinist of his time.
