The Italian conductor Claudio Abbado is one of the most outstanding conductors of the 20th century. It was his unique ability to make sound and music shine (Deutschlandfunk Kultur), for which he was celebrated internationally by both the press and the audience. In addition to his long-standing relationship with the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Vienna Philharmonic, he has also been chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra for many years (1979 to 1986), with which he has recorded a rich discography over the years.
Deutsche Grammophon is now celebrating this long-standing extraordinary collaboration with a limited 46-CD edition, which makes the conductor's multifaceted diversity comprehensible. The symphonies by Brahms or Mendelssohn, operas by Verdi or Bizet, Mozart's piano concertos repeatedly show what personality Claudio Abbado was. The recordings feature outstanding soloists such as Martha Argerich, Rudolf Serkin, Teresa Berganza, Hermann Prey, Gidon Kremer and Alfred Brendel. The 104-page booklet provides an insight into collaborative work in a newly written introductory text by Jon Tolansky. “Now it's the turn of those with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), among which - which is easy to forget - some of the highlights of the Abbado discography are located. Abbado's collaboration with the oldest self-governing orchestra on the island began in 1966. In its density and virtuosity, even in the seriousness that Abbado Mendelssohn pays tribute here, is still exemplary today. This also applies to Abbado's Ravel: he recorded the orchestral works, including the concerts from 1984 to 1988, with “La Valse” as the “Filler” for Mussorgsky's excellently implemented “Pictures of an Exhibition” as early as 1981. A highlight of this series is certainly the piano concerto in G major with Martha Argerich, but also other things, the ballet “Ma mère l'Oye”, for example, is beautifully captured here: detailed, rich in color and yet with the highest intensity. The great ballets of Stravinsky, from the suite from the” Firebird “to “Pulcinella” form another London complex of works. Released at the time on four LPs, which now conveniently fill two CDs, these recordings have always been celebrated - and rightly so - as milestones. Just as Abbado masters the tightrope act in “Pulcinella” to portray 18th-century melodies as music of the 20th century, none of his fascination has yet lost his fascination, not even his art of reconciling ferocity with refinement in the “Sacre”. “- Andreas Friesenhagen, Fono Forum 05/21
