While Glenn Gould was a pianist who performed the works of many composers, his name is inextricably linked to that of Johann Sebastian Bach. More than any other composer, Bach was Gould's speciality. From his first recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations in 1955 to his final recording, again of the Goldberg Variations in 1981, Gould recorded nearly all of Bach's keyboard music.

This set groups all of Gould's Bach recordings; not only those released on LP and CD, but also a number of previously unreleased recordings: outtakes from the 1955 Goldbergs recording session; a stereo mix of the 1955 Goldbergs; some preludes and fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier, from 1952 and 1954; and two live recordings, from 1957 and 1959, of the Goldbergs (Salzburg Festival, August, 1959) and the Sinfonias (Moscow, May, 1957). There are two discs of interviews with Gould - one with Tim Page, and another with John McClure - and a disc of Gould speaking about Bach in German. There are a total of 38 CDs.

This set also includes DVDs; 6 of them. Three of these are directed by Bruno Monsaigneon, featuring the Goldbergs on one, and two others with a variety of works. And three others are from the CBC, from 1957 to 1970, featuring Gould (and others) playing a variety of Bach's works. Many Gould fans are familiar with the Monsaigneon films, as they have been widely circulated - especially the Goldberg Variations video, which was my first introduction to seeing Glenn Gould perform. The CBC videos are less common, though they have been released in a 10-DVD set Glenn Gould on Television. What we have in the Bach set is, naturally, the Bach performances taken from that set. If you're a die-hard Gould fan, you'll want to get the full DVD set as well.

Fritz Reiner was one of the foremost conductors of his time. Crowning his long career in Europe and America was the decade from 1954 to 1963 as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra – an illustrious partnership that ranks along such other historical tenures as Karajan’s in Berlin, Szell’s in Cleveland and Bernstein’s in New York.
Luckily for posterity, Reiner’s legendary interpretations at the helm of the Chicago Symphony – which no less than Igor Stravinsky called “the most precise and flexible orchestra in the world” – were captured on record by RCA Victor. Now for the first time ever, they are being issued together in a single Sony Classical box set of 63 re-mastered CDs.
Born in Budapest in 1888, Reiner studied at the city’s fabled Academy of Music, where B?la Bart?k was his piano teacher. As principal conductor of the Dresden Royal Opera, he worked with Richard Strauss and in 1919 conducted the German premiere of Die Frau ohne Schatten. In 1922 he became music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and in 1938 moved to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, transforming both into major ensembles. In 1953, after a five-year stint at the Metropolitan Opera, he became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which he built into one of the world’s most famous and respected musical organizations.
Reiner was extraordinary not only as an orchestra builder but also for his broad range of repertoire. He was equally the master of the delicately balanced sonorities of Mozart and the massive richness of Richard Strauss. A champion of 20th-century music, he could also give incomparably lilting performances of Strauss waltzes. In both Pittsburgh and Chicago, Reiner recorded works by his former teacher Bart?k, and he was instrumental in convincing Serge Koussevitzky to commission Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra in 1943. His classic 1955 Chicago recording of that masterpiece is among the glories of this new set.
Reiner applied even more exacting standards to his recordings – an essential part of RCA’s Living Stereo success story – than he set for his concert performances. A consummate collaborator with soloists, he was in demand to record the great concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff with such renowned soloists as Jascha Heifetz, Arthur Rubinstein, Emil Gilels and Byron Janis. Equally celebrated is his 1959 Chicago recording of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with Maureen Forrester and Richard Lewis.
In ten years, he recorded 122 compositions with the CSO. The first was Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben, set down in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall on March 6, 1954. One of the earliest RCA stereophonic commercial recordings, it was followed two days later by Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra. Reiner’s last concerts in Chicago took place in the spring of 1963, and on April 22–23 he made his last recording with the orchestra: Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto, with Van Cliburn.
Every recording in this new 63-CD set comes from the best re-mastered source. A third have been newly re-mastered from the original tapes. This Reiner/Chicago Symphony edition is destined to become a cornerstone of serious record collections around the world.

Sergiu Celibidache’s relationship with the M?nchner Philharmoniker lasted from 1979 until the Romanian-born conductor’s death in 1996. The releases of recordings from the Progetto Martha Argerich, the festival over which the great lady presides each June in the Swiss resort of Lugano, have become one of the most reliable annual fixtures in the CD calendar. The latest compilation is more or less the mixture as before, bringing together musicians from several generations with whom Argerich has worked regularly or whose careers she has closely monitored, and featuring a range of mainstream chamber works as well as historical rarities and arrangements for multiple pianos.

Argerich fans are always looking for additions to her personal discography, too, and they get a couple here. She joins Lilya Zilberstein in Debussy’s two-piano arrangement of Schumann’s Six Canonic Studies Op 56, originally written for pedal piano; and with Eduardo Hubert as the other soloist and the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana under Alexander Vedernikov, she takes on Porteña (Latitude 34° 36° 30°), for two pianos and orchestra, a rather gruesome, sub-Piazzolla portrait of Buenos Aires by film-score composer Luis Bacalov. Otherwise, she partners Alexander Mogilevsky in Schubert’s Variations in A flat, D813, the violinist Géza Hosszu-Legocky in an arrangement of Bartok’s Romanian Dances, and joins Stephen Kovacevich for a rather stormy, fierce account of Debussy’s En Blanc et Noir, a work they recorded together in the 1970s.
