Maria Callas - The Complete Studio Recordings 1949-1969 [70 CDs, 2014] MP3

Artist: Maria Callas
Title Of Album: The Complete Studio Recordings 1949-1969
Year Of Release: 2014
Label (Catalog#): Warner Classics
Genre: Classical, Opera
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 Kbps
Full Size: 10.27 gb

Due for release on September 22 is ‘Callas Remastered: The Complete Studio Recordings’, a 69-disc Warner Classics box-set produced as the result of a major remastering project to transfer the original tapes to 24-bit/96kHz digital sound.

Containing 26 operas and 13 recital albums, and the subject of a major feature in Gramophone’s 2014 Awards issue, on sale now, the Callas project will also be available as 24-bit/96kHz downloads from the Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound, exclusively from Monday (September 22) until October 5.

The new set encompasses all the studio recordings Callas made for both EMI/Columbia and the Italian label Cetra between 1949 and 1969, and while these recordings have previously been remastered at CD quality, remastering engineer Allan Ramsay explains that this is the first time the tapes have been remastered at 24-bit/96kHz ‘beyond CD’ quality: ‘What this means is we’ve now got more high-frequency content and better definition to the sound.

‘We’ve been so careful in this project not to tamper, just to remove technical faults…for example, to reduce the rumble from a passing tube train at the Kingsway Hall, even remove the noise of a motorbike outside La Scala, Vespas going past and you can hear this noise which is terrible, it’s louder than the singing in some cases. With the technology we have now, we can reduce this noise and give the sound of the voice without interference.’

The remastering was carried out at London’s Abbey Road Studios with Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series speakers used throughout the process. The Worthing-based speaker company has a relationship with the studios going back more than a quarter of a century. Abbey Road engineer Andy Walters says that, for a project like this, ‘It’s obviously important that the monitoring speakers and room acoustics of a remastering room are superb: Bowers & Wilkins speakers don’t flatter or compliment the sound, but give a complete, true response.

‘This means we can hear exactly what problems might exist on an original master recording and then be afforded the opportunity to put them right, using our state-of-the-art technology.’

‘Callas Remastered: The Complete Studio Recordings’ contains at least one complete recording (in certain cases two recordings) of all Callas’s most famous stage roles, with the exception of Anna Bolena, though the lengthy final scene of that opera features on the recital ‘Mad Scenes’. The collection also contains complete recordings of operas she sang on stage more rarely – or even never at all – such as Manon Lescaut and Carmen.

The Amadeus were the most successful and highly-regarded Quartet of the 20th century. Benefitting from the jet aeroplane and from the record industry s ability to reach out to world, they dominated chamber music making for nearly 40 years.
But concert tours are only successful if reviews are ecstatic and audiences delighted. They both were. For nearly 40 years, the Quartet (who styled themselves The Wolf-Gang ) roved the world, argued, celebrated and worked like no other group, and changed not a single member: Norbert Brainin, Siegmund Nissel, Peter Schidlof and Martin Lovett had a recording career from 1951 to 1987, ending only with the death of Peter Schidlof in 1987.
These 70 CDs presenting almost their entire discography, together with distinguished and extensive presentation form one of the most extensive chamber music sets ever created, and stands as eloquent testimony to their thoughtful musicianship, technical calibre and to the immense esteem in which the world held them.

Glenn Gould - The Complete Original Jacket Collection [Limited Edition, 80 CD] (2007) APE

Artist: Glenn Gould
Title Of Album: The Complete Original Jacket Collection
Year Of Release: 2007
Label (Catalog#): Sony
Country: EU
Genre: Classical, Piano
Quality: APE (*image+.cue+.log)
Bitrate: Lossless
Time: 80 CD
Full Size: 13,7 Gb

The Glenn Gould Complete Jacket Collection" is presented to mark the brilliant pianist's 75th birthday and the 25th anniversary of his death. It is a fascinating, limited edition: all the artist's LP recordings in the "look and feel" of the original vinyl discs on 80 CDs.

The Canadian Glenn Gould (born in Toronto 25 September 1932 - died there 4 October 1982) was without doubt one of the most important pianists of all time. Even today, the idiosyncratic interpretations and the eccentric personality of the "James Dean of the piano" exert a continuing fascination.

In good time to commemorate the artist's birth 75 years ago on 25 September and his death 25 years ago on 4 October 2007, the Sony Classical label is launching a special project in honour of the double anniversary: "The Glenn Gould Complete Jacket Collection" transfers all the artist's recordings for LP on to 78 CDs, from Glenn Gould's legendary 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations to piano works by Richard Strauss released posthumously on 4 April 1984, and of course, not one of the brilliant artist's legendary Bach recordings is missed out.

Each of the 60 single and 9 double CDs consists of the exact recordings as first issued on vinyl and looks like a miniaturised form of the original disc: the CDs are in cardboard slipcases in the original design, and the CD itself is designed to look like a LP.

Supplemented by two bonus CDs, the limited "Glenn Gould Complete Jacket Collection" comprises 80 CDs mounted in a high-quality display case with a booklet of more than 240 pages. This booklet contains a new, detailed essay by the German Gould specialist Michael Stegemann on Glenn Gould and the LP recording era along with texts and repertoire details to all recordings in the edition, plus a listing and depiction of the records with reissue dates for repertoire that has appeared before.

The bonus CDs include the last great interview that Glenn Gould gave the American journalist Tim Page in 1981 and an essay on Johann Sebastian Bach and the fugue that Gould recorded in 1972 for a bonus LP. They also feature a number of late recordings that never appeared on vinyl: fragments of the "Italian Album" and Wagner's Siegfried Idyll in its orchestral version -- Gould's recording debut as conductor and his last recording of all, made on 8 September 1982 with members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Another rarity is Gould's own film music to George Roy Hill's Slaughterhouse Five from 1972.

Karajan: The Complete EMI Recordings Vol. 1 . Notes and Editorial Reviews To celebrate what would have been Herbert von Karajan's 100th birthday on April 5, 2008, EMI has gathered together all of the conductor's recordings for the label in two super-budget boxed sets. Volume 1 weighs in at an imposing 88 discs and focuses on orchestral repertoire (the second volume consists of vocal and operatic works). The first nine discs encompass Karajan's EMI Vienna Philharmonic sessions. Discs 10 through 46 survey Karajan's prolific Philharmonia Orchestra years, while the Berlin Philharmonic dominates discs 47 through 87, together with the handful of recordings Karajan made with the Orchestre de Paris. EMI organizes these subgroups in loose alphabetical order by composer, excepting fillers and sundry collections devoted to showpieces, overtures, light music, and the like. Lastly, Disc 88 offers "Karajan Remembered", a documentary bordering on infomercial, replete with narration, talking heads, and musical examples. By virtue of EMI's completeness mandate, odds and ends new to CD turn up--such as Dvorák's G minor Slavonic Dance (Berlin, 1979), plus Philharmonia versions of Mascagni's Intermezzi from Cavalleria Rusticana and L'amico Fritz (1959), Strauss' Tritsch-Tratsch Polka (1960), Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture (1954), and Leopold Mozart's Toy Symphony (1957). In addition, two piano concertos by Kurt Leimer, (with the composer at the piano) gain their first international release. Not to worry about a handful of missing operatic intermezzi, overtures, and entr'actes: they're saved for Volume 2, programmed in the context of the vocal albums where they originally appeared.

Volume 2 of EMI's comprehensive Herbert von Karajan centenary edition gathers virtually all of the conductor's operatic and vocal output for the label in one place, taking up 71 CDs (Disc 72 contains complete librettos in the form of PDF files). I use the word "virtually" because the package omits four posthumously issued archival items taped live during the 1957-60 Salzburg Festivals (Beethoven's Missa solemnis, Brahms' German Requiem, Bruckner's Te Deum, and Verdi's Requiem). Otherwise, it's all here.

Anne-Sophie Mutter’s mentor Herbert von Karajan called her “the greatest musical prodigy since the young Menuhin”. In this deluxe hardcover book are presented their earliest solo concerto recordings, beginning with Mozart from 1978, when the violinist who was just 14 played with “... the confidence and assurance of a seasoned professional” (Gramophone). The Beethoven (“rapt and poetic” – Gramophone) followed the next year; Bruch and Mendelssohn in 1980. All three albums immediately won universal acclaim with the young violinist praised for her assured and lyrically fresh tone while Karajan’s Berlin forces provided superlative musical support.
