Anna Moffo - The Complete RCA Recital Albums (12CD Box Set, 2015) FLAC

Artist: Anna Moffo
Title Of Album: The Complete RCA Recital Albums
Year Of Release: 2015
Label (Catalog#): Sony Classical
Country: UK
Genre: Classical
Quality: FLAC (image + .cue, log)
Bitrate: Lossless
Time: 13:53:49
Full Size: 6.62 Gb

THE FIRST OF THE TWELVE discs in this collection of Anna Moffo’s RCA recital recordings begins with a 1960 performance of the jewel song from Gounod’s Faust, and that selection, along with the others on this disc, sets out the singer’s basic assets and liabilities. It’s a fresh lyric sound—Moffo was twenty-eight that year—even throughout the range, accurate in pitch and coloratura, with a good try at a trill. She phrases with musicality but not much nuance or variety of color. These qualities serve her and the music well in the coloratura fireworks of the shadow song from Meyerbeer’s Dinorah; “Bel raggio,” from Rossini’s Semiramide; and the bell song from Delibes’s Lakm?, all of which she tosses off with ease. Micaela’s aria from Carmen, however, demands more emotional thrust, while her Mim? and Li? are bland and anonymous.
Moffo’s career, as she admitted in later years, was damaged by too much, too soon. The essay in the printed booklet is aptly titled “The Curse of Beauty.” It didn’t help that Moffo was compared to Maria Callas, and was rashly encouraged to emulate the older diva. By 1962, Moffo recorded a disc of Verdi arias—not just lighter pieces such as the bolero from I Vespri Siciliani, but also the big stuff from Un Ballo in Maschera, Aida and Otello, in which she is plainly beyond her depth, vocally and interpretively. A year later, she was pushed in the opposite direction, recording The Dream Duet, operetta excerpts with tenor Sergio Franchi performed in a stylistic no-man’s land somewhere between bad Broadway, bad Vienna and bad Hollywood. Skip this nightmare entirely.

Magnificat: 500 Years of Choral Masterworks [50CD Box Set] (2012) FLAC

Title Of Album: Magnificat: 500 Years of Choral Masterworks
Year Of Release: 2012
Label (Catalog#): Decca/Deutsche Grammophon
Country: Germany
Genre: Classical, Baroque, Romantic, Modern
Quality: Flac (*tracks,cue,log,d.booklet)
Bitrate: Lossless
Time: 62 hours 49 minutes 40 seconds

This unique, limited-edition boxed set offers 50 CDs of the greatest choral masterpieces of the past 500 years, stretching from Renaissance Masses and the glories of the Baroque and Classical eras through to the major works of the Romantic era and the diversity of the 20th and 21st centuries, all in some of the greatest recordings ever committed to disc.

Western art music owes its very existence to the church: harmony and multi-stranded polyphony derive from the work of church musicians working across Europe 500 years ago, seeking either to expiate sins or glorify and magnify the Almighty with praises: hence the title `Magnificat'.

The performances include an array of stellar artists in exceptional - even legendary - recordings from two of classical music's greatest labels, Decca and Deutsche Grammophon. Citing just some: John Eliot Gardiner's definitive Bach B Minor Mass, and St John Passion, famed Monteverdi Vespers and Brahms Requiem readings; Peter Schreier's Award-winning Mozart Requiem; Paul McCreesh's Haydn Creation and Sch?tz Vespers; Giulini's Rossini Stabat Mater; Solti's incandescent Verdi Requiem and Mahler Symphony No. 8; Christopher Hogwood's incisive period-instrument Messiah; the acclaimed Walton Belshazzar's Feast with Bryn Terfel; Britten's own definitive War Requiem and Bernstein's interpretation of his Chichester Psalms among many others. Sung texts - including a translation into English where appropriate - are included on a special bonus CD

A 160-page booklet offers detailed tracklistings, full artist and production information including details on recording dates and venues and producers. A 4000-word essay by noted choral music writer Andrew Stewart is provided in English, French and German.

Georges Cziffra – Ses Enregistrements 1956-1986 (Box Set 40CDs, 2009) FLAC

Artist: Georges Cziffra
Title Of Album: Ses Enregistrements 1956-1986
Year Of Release: 2009
Label (Catalog#): EMI
Country: EU
Genre: Classical
Quality: FLAC (*tracks)
Bitrate: Lossless
Time: 40 CD
Full Size: 10,4 Gb

This boxed set contains the recorded legacy of the ‘meteor’ Georges Cziffra,
preserved in 40 CDs that make for consistently varied and thrilling listening. They bring together all the studio recordings Cziffra made for EMI and Philips, from his first 25 cm, 33 rpm microgroove LP, released in 1956 when he arrived in Paris, to the last sessions in the Saint-Frambourg chapel in Senlis in May 1986 a few years before he died.

This thirty-year period included many highly successful tours, both in France and abroad – notably Japan –, which brought Cziffra considerable fame, an image in striking contrast with his own modest self-definition as a ‘workman’ aspiring only to share his love of music and the piano. His legendary virtuosity, the outcome of unsparing, almost superhuman hard work, tended to overshadow the inner turmoil of this rather shy man, who suffered personally from Nazi oppression before undergoing the humiliating ordeals inflicted by the post-war Hungarian regime, the accumulated effects of which drove him into exile, where the vicissitudes of human existence brought their own share of suffering.

Cziffra strove for perfection and often rerecorded the same works. It seemed valid to run the risk of redundancy and include all the versions he made of these: though similar, they varied considerably with different moods or new perceptions of the piano’s resources. The dazzling improvisations, paraphrases and trans*****ions at the beginning of this collection bear witness to the power of his imagination in response to well-known pieces of music, while giving us a fuller picture of the personal style he deployed in his playing. Unreleased test recordings from the EMI France archives round off the set, making it truly complete. As with all the other recordings, enormous care went into the transfers.

The renowned artists, violinist Jascha Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, joined forces in 1949 at Chicago's Ravinia Festival. Twelve years later, and now good friends, both artists were in semi-retirement from the concert stage, yet enjoyed their evenings of chamber music with friends. Here they conceived The Heifetz-Piatigorsky Concerts as a way to share their love of chamber music with the public. They aimed to present repertoire not often heard in concert and then record them. The Heifetz-Piatigorsky Concerts continued for several years, with a series of performances in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York that included a range of distinguished guest artists. The last of these concerts was in 1974 when Heifetz ended his performing career. This first ever complete collection of The Heifetz-Piatigorsky Concerts includes Dvorak's Piano Quintet No. 2 and Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence. The 21 CDs are packaged in mini-sleeves with the original album artwork and feature a new introduction by Heifetz expert John Maltese.
