There is no doubt that The Beatles were a huge influence over the global acceptance of rhythm & blues music and what would eventually become soul. However certain record labels also played an important role and it isn't just Detroit's Berry Gordy who could take all the credit as over in New York, Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson et al were also on a mission. Through Ray Charles the east coast story firmly established itself as a contender and rather interestingly this set kicks off with Bobby Darin's version of 'What'd I say' which charted at No. 24 in the pop charts. This set continues in that theme with some of the artists not always performing in a style that was expected of them. This is another fascinating entry in Jasmine's early roots of soul series and like the rest it is a superb CD full of excellent and surprising tracks.

One of the reasons American entertainment became such a strong cultural mix was because of the immigration from so many countries. Many of the great Broadway songwriters and comedians were Jewish, while blues, soul and gospel came from the African-Americans. Cajun music came courtesy of the French; while English and Irish ballads dominated folk music, and even the famed American balladeers were often immigrants of Italian extraction. There were many operatic singers from Italy or of Italian extraction and this inevitably crossed over into popular music. The American singers were largely from Italian families, based predominantly in New York or Philadelphia, and this 60-track collection features the very best of them.

"Brass Hommage" is a tribute to the inimitable sound which has made German Brass famous. It acknowledges the success of an audio vision come true: to create a chamber-music ensemble with ten brass musicians, a group with the sound potential of a mighty organ, a symphony orchestra or a big band – a vision which the German Brass musicians have achieved with the musical elegance that is their very own. Their special arrangements have made them into inventors of a highly refined sound idiom that was to become their hallmark. It is compositions for the organ and symphonic works from the classical field that provide the brass players with inspiration, but jazz standards or South American music deliver an equal appeal and the challenge to expand the palette of tone colours. A tango like "La Cumparsita" can transform into the rhythm of a bandoneon, while music by Cole Porter exudes a touch of Broadway flair, "As Time Goes By" conjures up the power of the images from the legendary film "Casablanca", and a jazz classic like "Bourbon Street Parade" emulates the sound of a Dixieland band from New Orleans.
