Der Entwickler Visiontrick Media bezeichnet Pavilion selbst als ein »Fourth-Person-Adventure«, denn darin wird die Hauptfigur nicht direkt sondern über die Manipulation ihrer Umgebung gesteuert. Aus der Iso-Perspektive wird eine surreale Fantasywelt erkundet, die in handgezeichneten 2D-Grafiken dargestellt wird. Schwerpunkte des Gameplays liegen auf Puzzeln und dem audiovisuellen Erlebnis mit einer atmosphärischen Musikuntermalung des Ambient-Interpreten Tony Gerber.
